Adding foodie flair to your UK holiday

With all those Instagrams of your friends drinking sangria and eating pintxos, it's easy to feel like you're missing out on the culinary delights of a holiday a bit further afield.

Luckily, you can eat just about as well this side of the Channel if you know where to look. We've foraged for the best hidden gems the UK has to offer to help give your staycation some foodie flair.

The Company Shed - Mersea Island, Essex

This unassuming seaside shack serves some of the freshest, most delicious seafood around. Arrive before 12pm on the weekends during summer to make sure you get a spot, and don't forget to BYOB (bring your own bread).

At Kitchen - Plymouth

You don't need to plan a trip to Hanoi to enjoy deliciously authentic and fresh Vietnamese cuisine - all you need is a train ticket to Plymouth and a visit to At Kitchen. A favourite with locals and visitors alike, you'll find it tucked away in Pannier Market.

Sole Bay Fish Company - Southwold, Suffolk

Staycationing in Suffolk? Make sure you pay local favourite Sole Bay Fish Company a visit. Their crab platter and beer battered oysters are a great cure for sunburn after a day at the seaside (aloe vera also helps).

New York Deli - Cardiff

If a trip to Cardiff is on the cards for you this summer, put a trip to the New York Deli at the top of your to-do list. Their giant hoagies, towering bagels and overstuffed sandwiches have been local favourites for the past 26 years. For first-timers, the New York Hoagie is a must-try - just make sure you're hungry.

Wildfire - Edinburgh

If you get sick of indulging in haggis and shortbread on your Edinburgh staycation (unlikely, but it happens), we recommend a trip to Wildfire. This surf and turf restaurant is famous for its friendly atmosphere and excellent food made from fresh, locally-sourced produce.

House of the Trembling Madness - York

York has lots to offer staycationers: Tudor buildings, weeping willows, picturesque canals... and House of the Trembling Madness. Pay this quirky establishment a visit and enjoy their impressive selection of beer, a fantastic menu of fresh Yorkshire produce and the quirky medieval vibe.

Casa Colombiana - Leeds

If you have a craving for empanadas but don't have the time to fly to South America, this Leeds restaurant is a delicious alternative. We've heard the chorizo huilense is a winner (and so are the salsa classes, apparently).
