Managing your standing orders and Direct Debits
Direct Debits
You can cancel a Direct Debit via ‘Standing Orders and Direct Debits'. In the App this is in the ‘Move Money’ tab, in Online Banking it’s in ‘Manage Money’.
To stop a payment being made you must cancel your Direct Debit before 4:30pm the working day before the payment is due. You should also let the payee know that you’ve cancelled the Direct Debit.
Standing orders
You can easily change the amount you pay or cancel a standing order via ‘Standing orders and Direct Debits'. In the App this is in the ‘Move Money’ tab, in Online Banking it’s in ‘Manage Money’.
Select the standing order you want to change and you'll see the 'Manage Payment' option, which will reveal the 'Amend Payment' screen.
If you need to change anything else - the date or destination account number, for example - you'll need to set up a new standing order by selecting the 'Move Money' option and creating a new standing order. Don't forget to cancel the old standing order if you no longer need it.
What is the Direct Debit Guarantee?
The Direct Debit Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept Direct Debits. If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit, the organisation will notify you, normally at least 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the organisation to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by the organisation or first direct, you're entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from first direct.
If you receive a refund you're not entitled to, you must pay it back when the organisation asks you to.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by contacting your bank or building society. Make sure you also notify the payee.
